Location: In a very central position in Lewes, many years ago the plot was home to a small pub called the Grapevine. It is set above the London bound train platform and is very focal from Southover Road and the neighbouring Lewes District Council Planning Office. It has been used for parking for over thirty years.
Design: Although the site was purchased with a consented scheme for a house it became apparent that it could not be physically accommodated on the site. We decided in any case that the design could be improved and we appointed BBM Sustainable Design to come up with some solutions.
We went through a number of iterations with the planners, including a tall, square building and a high walled courtyard style before settling on the final design, which takes form and scale from the neighbouring house and uses carefully detailed slate and render to give a modern look and feel.
Construction: Work commenced in February 2006 and was completed in August 2006.
